7 Must-try South Indian Foods in Dubai

Indian cuisine is as varied as it’s cultural and linguistic diversity. While tandoori naan, butter chicken and chole-puri might be favourites in the North, mishti doi and sandesh in the East and paav bhaji, dhokla and undiyo in the West, to experience the culinary best of South India, you have to head to the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Spicy, coconutty, steamed and primarily rice-based, that’s the essentials of South Indian foods in a nutshell.  Here’s a list of 7 must-try South-Indian foods in Dubai that will take you on a gastronomical tour of flavour and tradition. And if you can’t find a restaurant to serve them to you, they are just as easy to recreate at home.
  1. Masala dosa – Rice is a staple of south Indian cuisine but the finger-licking masala dosa has its roots in Karnataka. A traditional breakfast food, the batter for dosa is made of fermented rice and lentils and is popularly served with steaming hot sambar and coconut chutney. To make it at home, cut open a pack of readymade iD Fresh idli dosa batter to enjoy an authentic taste.
  2. Idli – Soft, fluffy steamed rice cakes made again from a fermented batter is another South Indian staple. They are light, mild-tasting and easy to digest and the best thing about them is that they are easy to replicate at home with iD Fresh’s idli batter.
  3. Filter coffee – Coffee aficionados will vouch for the fact that South Indian filter coffee is unique in its taste and aroma. The typical brew is milky, frothy and best enjoyed piping hot after tossing it between two metal cups until it’s well-blended and at the perfect drinking temperature.

4. Pesarattu – Pesarattu is a green gram dosa that is eaten either as a snack or a breakfast meal. A native food of Andhra Pradesh, this delectable and healthy dish is a protein rich, thin pancake, often served with a ginger chutney.
5. Kerala parotta with beef fry– If all the above vegetarian fare is leaving you craving for something spicy and non-vegetarian, the Kerala parotta with beef fry is a must. A flaky, layered flatbread, it is commonly eaten with Kerala-style dry beef fry that is hearty and delicious thanks to the generous flavours of ground spices, black pepper, coconut and chillies.
6. Curd rice – After the fiery masalas of the beef stew, if you want a dish to soothe your palette and stomach, nothing beats the south Indian curd rice preparation. There are many variations to this dish but it is often made with lightly fried spices like mustard seed, cumin, coriander leaves, asafoetida as a seasoning to a simple rice and curd mixture. It is also commonly used to nurse upset stomachs back to health.
7. Payasam – We’ve not forgotten those of you who have a sweet tooth. Payasam is a dessert that is often served at festivals or weddings and is made by adding rice to boiled, sweetened milk (sometimes its replaced by coconut milk and jaggery) and flavoured with cashews, almonds and cardamom. It’s a sweet but addictive delight.
